I suppose if we're agreeing that a typed medium and verbal medium result in different outcomes, that is true. I'm not entirely certain I agree. Talking as we are now, punctuation means little. Omitting it results in no less difficulty of understanding. It's just there for courtesy, mostly. Though I will concede that point for a speech or otherwise storytelling event.

You can assume the displacement or lack of punctuation in the spoken word. You can't when it's written.

Most people type as they speak, anyway, with internet shorthand as a bit of an exception. The punctuation is just there to let you know when ideas are seperated. You can hear the commas and periods during a face to face conversation if you pay a bit of attention. Both mediums it would tend to work well, is my argument.

It would translate well into verbal communication, but not when it's written.

it does not assume grammatical error. It assumes there is no comma. Much the same way the descriptor "big ass" isn't grammatically incorrect, one can add comedy by asking "why would I want an ass [object]?"

Yes, but your critique does not, because it assumes grammatical error.

there was also a comma in eric's comment. it follows the same train of thought
|
Jon
July 11th, 2010, 3:50 pm

There was a comma there, so your critique doesn't make sense.

My fault for not testing it in IE.

And it's the most popular browser, so you can't be blamed.
|
Jon
July 10th, 2010, 2:01 pm

That's IE for you, though. As far as I'm aware, their upcoming versions will be more standards-compliant.

Jon
July 10th, 2010, 2:00 pm

Ergo, fail train.
|
Jon
July 10th, 2010, 2:00 pm

So you will fail and look dumb when you try to ride on theirs and your train derails.
|
Jon
July 10th, 2010, 2:00 pm
|
Other trains won't be able to use your shit.
|
Jon
July 10th, 2010, 2:00 pm

Which is all good and well, but this is the Internet, so... that's like building your own special train system with track sizes 2 feet bigger than normal trains.
|
Jon
July 10th, 2010, 1:59 pm
|
Well, it's just that Microsoft says "fuck you" to standards, and does things their own way, rather than the accepted way.
